Generator Safety Tips

On average, 70 people are killed by generators yearly. In fact, during Hurricane Laura in 2020, the leading cause of death was generators.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from engine exhaust is the primary hazard, so your generator should never run in your garage. Even with the door open, the risk of carbon monoxide or fire is too great. So make sure you place your generator at least 6 feet away from your home and keep it away from any doors or windows.

Try to keep your generator dry and never operating in rain or while in standing water to avoid electrocution.

Never plug your generator into a wall or the dryer outlet. This is called “backfeeding” power and could not only harm your house but also local line workers.

Please use extreme caution when refilling the tank once the fuel runs out.
