New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio Ends Presidential Campaign

Democratic Presidential Candidates Speak At Historic Galivants Ferry Stump

New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio announced Friday that he was ending his presidential campaign for the 2020 Democratic nomination for President.

"Getting out there, being able to hear people's concerns, address them with new ideas, has been an extraordinary experience," de Blasio said on MSNBC's Morning Joe on Friday. "But I have to tell you, at the same time, I feel like I've contributed all I can to this primary election and it's clearly not my time so I'm going to end my presidential campaign."

DeBlasio entered the race in May, touting his accomplishments such as his signature pre-kindergarten program as well as New York City's low crime rate during his time in office. The 58-year-old was elected mayor of New York City in 2014 and acted as New York City's public advocate from 2010 to 2013 before that. He also served as campaign manager for Hillary Clinton's campaign for U.S. Senate in 2000.

His time in office as mayor has seen new programs such as de-escalation training for police officers and the implementation of body cameras, as well as reducing prosecutions for cannabis possession.

"As president, I will take on the wealthy, I will take on the big corporations, I will not rest until this government serves working people," DeBlasio said in a video announcing his campaign. "As mayor of the largest city in America, I've done just that." De Blasio also criticized President Trump aggressively in the announcement, calling the him a “bully.”"

President Donald Trump took the opportunity to throw an elbow at DeBlasio's campaign on Twitter Friday morning.

Oh no, really big political news, perhaps the biggest story in years! Part time Mayor of New York City, @BilldeBlasio, who was polling at a solid ZERO but had tremendous room for growth, has shocking dropped out of the Presidential race," Trump wrote on Twitter. "NYC is devastated, he’s coming home!"
