Minnesota Man Throws Away Napkin, Gets Arrested For 1993 Murder

Authorities in Minnesota have finally solved the 1993 cold case murder of Jeanne Ann “Jeanie” Childs. 52-year-old Jerry Westrom was taken into custody after officials matched DNA they obtained from a discarded napkin with DNA left at the crime scene.

When Childs was killed in 1993, investigators found fingerprints, footprints, and DNA evidence at the scene but were unable to identify the suspect. In 2018, officials tried to close the murder case by running the DNA they collected at the crime scene through a database compiled by a genealogy website. They got a match on Westrom and renewed the investigation.

Detectives followed Westrom to a hockey game and pulled a napkin he had used out of a trash can. After the DNA on the napkin matched the DNA found at Childs home, Westrom was arrested at his office. He was charged with second-degree murder and is being held at Hennepin County Jail on a $1 million bond.
